Reminder: I do not count Biden Victory Fund emails, RNC emails, or Donald J. Trump for President emails in this recap.
For all new readers: Welcome! I am currently on the mailing lists of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, though I have previously been on the mailing lists of 28 Democratic candidates! This blog breaks down recent emails with charts and excerpts. If you already know all of this, feel free to skip to the next chart!
It took some time for the Trump emails to kick in, so I started officially tracking his list on July 7. I have been tracking Biden’s for longer, but I will start comparing them as of July 7. All of these emails are going to a new email, and I have not donated, filled out surveys, signed petitions, or otherwise interacted with either candidate’s emails.
The rules I try to follow for the various categories are laid out in The Framework.
Donald Trump sent 10 emails on Thursday, while Joe Biden only sent 1.
I did receive 2 emails from the Biden Victory Fund, but that is not the email list I am tracking.
Biden’s one email was asking me what he could do to get me to donate for the first time. (The corresponding donor email was asking what I could say to a non-donor to get them to donate.) Trump, meanwhile, was doing everything he could to get me to give him money (or sign up for texts).
For a President determined “not to cause panic” (his excuse for downplaying the threat of COVID-19), Trump was inciting panic Wednesday. His very first email of the day declared that the most dangerous cities in America are all run by Democrats, that’s what we have to look forward to if they win, and not only are they trying to defund the police, but they’ll also defund the military. He then went on to plug his “D.C. visit” contest, his “signed MAGA hat” contest, and his “Debate visit” contest (imagine being RIGHT THERE when Don Jr.’s dad OBLITERATES the Loch Ness Monster of the Swamp, Biden).
Trump also offered me a signed photo that was already personalized with my name on it, so if I don’t pay him $75 for it, what else is he going to do with it? (2 emails) and a personalized Platinum card, also already printed and ready for me (despite the last chance to receive this card being offered several days ago, and the fact that he’s no longer claiming the platinum card is exclusively for his top 500 supporters only). He also pointed out that if I sign up for the Trump Texts, I could get on a super-limited-space campaign strategy call with the President, and his Supreme Court picks included Senators Tom Cotton, Josh Hawley, and Ted Cruz, and Biden hadn’t released his picks yet because he was too afraid that the American people would reject him.
Perhaps the most spectacular was his 800% match email, though, in which he showed me exactly who would be matching my donation 800%.
This check certainly implies that Trump’s own money would be going toward the match, though in true Trump fashion, he used this exact same generic image 5 times in the same email with different suggested contributions:
He did point out that this exclusive offer can’t be offered to everyone, so I shouldn’t share that information.
With every email Trump sends, the stench of desperation grows. I marvel that his supporters still see him as calm and rational and strong in the face of this level of unhinged bloviating.
