The Democratic National Convention began, and Joe Biden let it do the talking for him.
Donald Trump, on the other hand, bloviated all night.

For all new readers: Welcome! I am currently on the mailing lists of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, though I have previously been on the mailing lists of 28 Democratic candidates! This blog breaks down recent emails with charts and excerpts. If you already know all of this, feel free to skip to the next chart!
It took some time for the Trump emails to kick in, so I started officially tracking his list on July 7. I have been tracking Biden’s for longer, but I will start comparing them as of July 7. All of these emails are going to a new email, and I have not donated, filled out surveys, signed petitions, or otherwise interacted with either candidate’s emails.
The rules I try to follow for the various categories are laid out in The Framework.

Donald Trump sent out 10 emails on Monday, while Joe Biden only sent 2.

As per usual, Trump was mostly asking for money, giving me matched offers so we could send a message to those RADICAL SOCIALISTS whose convention was beginning. He offered me a signed photo ($75), Defend the Police stickers ($10 for 2), and 30% off my purchase at the Donald J. Trump official campaign store with a code JUST FOR ME and not to share with anyone at all ever (2020RNC).
After all, he said, I deserve that sale.

It’s not usually hard to tell the difference between a “competitive” email and a “hostile” one. Competitive emails at least somewhat stick to reality:
President Trump is our only hope.
The future of our Country is at stake and we’ve come too far under this President to let things go back to the way they were before. Do you REALLY want another Obama? We didn’t think so!
Because of YOUR support, this movement CRUSHED Sleepy Joe and the Radical Democrats by $25 MILLION in July, and now we need to go even BIGGER in August if we’re going to do it again.
We’re already halfway through the month, and President Trump asked us to reach out to make sure we stay on track.
This is SO important that he’s activated a 600%-MATCH for the NEXT HOUR.
If you care about our children and their future, then it’s time to step up and add your name to the list of mid-month contributors who helped us CRUSH our goal.
President Trump asked us to let him know who contributes to this email. We hope we can include your name.
Diamond and Silk
No, I didn’t know who Diamond and Silk are either. Apparently, they’re a pair of Black women who are YouTube personalities who support Trump.
Go figure.
Hostile, on the other hand, is reserved for when the competitiveness becomes nasty. Threats of America being destroyed by the other side are always hostile… but warnings that four more years of Trump will irreparably change America is competitive. It’s all about the restraint in the wording (and, let’s be honest, the amount of shouting done by text formatting).

It’s definitely one of those “I know it when I see it” things, although I’ll be the first to admit that I’m biased toward Biden.
Open hostility toward Americans is not a trait I want in my President. We are all Americans. We don’t agree on everything, though 91% of us agree that the United States Postal Service is a great service that should be fully funded and restored to what it was. (Yes, DeJoy is saying he’ll stop sabotaging it, but he’s already removed 95% of the machines he was going to remove to sabotage it, so that doesn’t make much difference now.) Regardless of our differences, our President needs to fight for ALL of us, not just the people who kiss his ass.
