Days 439 and 440: 7/31/20-8/1/20

Donald Trump does not understand time zones and deadlines.

EDIT: Apparently, neither do I.

For all new readers: Welcome! I am currently on the mailing lists of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, though I have previously been on the mailing lists of 28 Democratic candidates! This blog breaks down recent emails with charts and excerpts. If you already know all of this, feel free to skip to the next chart!

It took some time for the Trump emails to kick in, so I started officially tracking his list on July 7. I have been tracking Biden’s for longer, but I will start comparing them as of July 7. All of these emails are going to a new email, and I have not donated, filled out surveys, signed petitions, or otherwise interacted with either candidate’s emails.

The rules I try to follow for the various categories are laid out in The Framework.

Biden had the same email count as last weekend.

Donald Trump sent a whopping 13 emails in two days, while Joe Biden had a more reserved 9.

Every single Trump email asked for a donation

Most of Trump’s emails included a 600% matching offer. One of them was an oddly phrased contest email. Usually, with contests, it’s “Enter to win a chance to have an EPIC photo with your favorite president!” This time, however, it was “Donate now for a 600% match and ALSO you’ll be entered to win a chance to have an EPIC photo with your favorite president!”

For some reason, all of Trump’s contests seem to focus on the fact that you’ll get a picture with Trump. It’s not the trip, not the experience, not even the meal you’ll get to share with the president while you advise him on matters of state, no. The important thing is the picture. Which will be epic.

And your guest is tacked on as an afterthought.

Biden, on the other hand, was offering fundraising events, policies I could sign my support of, and a welcome to the team card for his future VP, whomever she may be.

Huh. Guilt-tripping is UP.

As the deadline loomed closer (and wooshed right past), Trump cranked up the guilt. It was, after all, the FINAL DAY to donate before the end-of-month deadline…

Um… that date?

Yes. Trump was emailing me on August 1 to squeak my July donation in before midnight. As late as 4:06 AM Eastern, he was telling me it wasn’t too late to donate for his July deadline.

(Narrator: It was too late)

He was telling me that he had extended the deadline just for me.

(Narrator: That isn’t how FEC deadlines work)

He also was telling me that he was upping the stakes, and he actually used the term correctly. My donation match went from 700% down to 600% matching, which yes, will make it harder for him to hit his goal, which is how you up the stakes.

(Narrator: He was trying to say he was making it easier to hit his goal by raising my match, but he hadn’t bothered to keep track of that sort of thing)

Trump and Biden did both email me on August 1st to give me an update on their financial goals.

I have to say, reading Biden’s emails immediately after Trump’s do give me a better appreciation for Biden’s email team.

I still don’t think they’re amazing, but my god, the way just a few drops of basic human decency can make an email slide down so much nicer…

Trump’s emails: NYOOOOOM
