Day 424: 7/17/20

EDIT: This post was written when Trump’s emails were hiding in Spam. Here is the correct breakdown of this day’s emails.

For the first time, Joe Biden and Donald Trump sent the same number of emails!

For all new readers: Welcome! I am currently on the mailing lists of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, though I have previously been on the mailing lists of 28 Democratic candidates! This blog breaks down recent emails with charts and excerpts. If you already know all of this, feel free to skip to the next chart!

It took some time for the Trump emails to kick in, so I started officially tracking his list on July 7. I have been tracking Biden’s for longer, but I will start comparing them as of July 7. All of these emails are going to a new email, and I have not donated, filled out surveys, signed petitions, or otherwise interacted with either candidate’s emails.

The rules I try to follow for the various categories are laid out in The Framework.

The two candidates tied today

Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump sent 3 emails on Friday.

No donate emails from Trump?

While Biden asked me for money and to sign my name to endorse him, Trump had a variety of other asks. He had some new(?) merch for me: yard signs! If I donated at least $20, I could get a FREE pair of yard signs!

Exclusive offer, JUST FOR ME.

But in the same email, if I read all the way to the bottom…

He wants me to have the yard signs so badly that I don’t even have to donate that much to get a set!

Trump was also excited about his upcoming virtual fundraiser. Just like Biden frequently does, he held a contest so that if I donated anything (again), I could be entered for the chance to win a private call with him before the fundraiser. Again, he desperately wants me to win, but not enough to rig things in my favor. I still had to donate and survive the contest.

Finally, for the fundraiser, Trump wants to answer his top supporters’ questions… so he gave me a link to ask him anything. The President himself will be reviewing all questions, I was assured, so I can ask him whatever I wanted.

I resisted the urge to ask him if he was deliberately trying to kill America or just accidentally blundering into it.

They all had different themes.

While Trump talked about his event, Biden asked me to endorse him. He asked me to donate to build momentum going into the National Convention in just one month. And finally, he asked me to donate, because Trump still has a massive cash-on-hand advantage.

Joe Biden: $242 million, Donald Trump: $295 million
Is it just me, or does the font used look a lot like Trump’s font?

There’s only $53 million between Biden and Trump, though Trump has been fundraising for 3+ years, and Biden has been fundraising for 3+ months.

I think everyone is tired of Trump… and maybe tired of Republicans in general. It sounds like the Republicans are starting to get worried with how much money the Democrats are raking in this cycle. Perhaps the Democratic Blue Wave of 2018 was really just the start, and the real tsunami is coming in November…

Still, we can’t get complacent. It’s not enough to win. We have to win by the largest margin we possibly can, to tell the Republicans that this behavior is not American, and we are not okay with it.

Trump managed to keep just ahead of half of Biden’s emails.
