Day 408: 7/1/20

New month, same number of emails from Joe Biden.

For all new readers: Welcome! I am currently on the mailing lists of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, though I have previously been on the mailing lists of 28 Democratic candidates! This blog breaks down recent emails with charts and excerpts. If you already know all of this, feel free to skip to the next chart!

It took some time for the Trump emails to kick in, so I started officially tracking his list on July 7. I have been tracking Biden’s for longer, but I will start comparing them as of July 7. All of these emails are going to a new email, and I have not donated, filled out surveys, signed petitions, or otherwise interacted with either candidate’s emails.

The rules I try to follow for the various categories are laid out in The Framework.

There was one late-night email.

Joe Biden sent 4 emails to each account on the first day of July, though the last one came after 10 PM. Staff just couldn’t wait to let me know about their monthly fundraising haul.

So many asks! It must be newsletter day!

Sure enough, for the first of the month, one of the emails was the newsletter from Joe Biden.

Policies? Am I dreaming?

As per usual, the newsletter covered all of the important topics that Biden doesn’t bother to send in stand-alone emails. The DACA Supreme Court ruling was covered here, as were worries about COVID-19, racial injustices, and LGBTQ+ rights. None of these topics are important enough on their own to receive a full email, but they can all be crammed into one massive hodge-podge of a communication to save room everywhere else for fundraising.

And sure enough, every non-newsletter email of the day was focused on fundraising. Even though the month (and quarter) had just finished, they couldn’t spare a single email to just say thank you. Even their gratitude emails were reminding me that July is notoriously difficult for fundraising, and so they need me to immediately donate again.

Biden’s campaign manager did email me with the final June numbers, though.

$141,000,000* for the month of June, with an average donation of $34.

4,147,058 donations in the month of June.

Remember all those emails from June 30 about how they were worried they weren’t going to hit their 3 million donations over the entire quarter goal?

Remember those emails telling me the truth, that it was super important that this deadline doesn’t get missed, honest?

Remember that?

Because I sure do.

Look, I get it. You need money for a campaign. I’m not mad that you need money for a campaign. I’m glad you outraised Trump yet again.

I’m mad that you lie to your supporters in an attempt to garner pity to get the money you need for your campaign. If you can’t be honest about the small stuff, why should we trust you about the big stuff?

*This number is RIDICULOUSLY high for a Biden month of fundraising. Biden has only ever gotten up to about $46 million in his very best fundraising month. It is very likely that this is a Biden/DNC joint fundraising haul, however, they did not use that language and we won’t know for sure until they give us more information or after they file officially on the 20th.

Trump’s mailing list is taking its sweet time getting me onboard.
